Warsaw has become home to one of the largest and most modern public media libraries in Central and Eastern Europe. The new center, opened Oct. 28, is called Mediateka Start-Meta. The facility includes a computerized library and reading room, a multimedia education center and a mobile movie theater covering 1,400 square meters in a building at 13a Szegedyńska St. in the Bielany district of northern Warsaw. The library has free internet access and a round-the-clock book return system, and construction work will be soon completed on an 800-square-meter interactive playground for children. "We hope the playground and the Mediateka Start-Meta media library will set new standards and become pioneer projects in the city," Grzegorz Pietruczuk, the deputy mayor of the Bielany district, said. Mediateka Start-Meta, managed by the public library of Bielany, will host science- and culture-related meetings with special guests, screen movies, stage plays and hold workshops for up to 90 participants, such as classes in foreign languages. The library will be available for teachers to conduct classes. Warsaw residents visiting the library will be able to borrow books or read them without leaving the library, browse a large collection of comic books, play video games, and listen to CDs and vinyl records. The media library will consist of around 55,000 books and 5,000 CDs, DVDs and other multimedia items. Construction of the library, designed by the Rea Design company, began in 2009 and will cost a total of zl.15 million. Mediateka Start-Meta will be the 192nd library in Warsaw.
