April 5, 2011 Main opposition party PiS' leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has spurred much controversy among Poles and caused an outcry from his political rivals by saying that there is no such thing as Silesian nationality and that claiming that the Silesian nation is a "camouflaged German option". Kaczyński's comments related to the national census starting in Poland, where an option of Silesian nationality is included as one of possible answers in the form. MPs from the Silesian branch of the ruling PO decided to file discrimination charges against PiS leader. According to government's spokesperson Pawel Gras Kaczynski divides Poles in a disgusting way. Left-wing opposition party SLD MP Marek Siwiec condemned Kaczynski for "putting Poles in conflict with Silesians". One of PiS' leaders defended Kaczynski saying that the quote about Silesians was put out of context by the media, the daily Gazeta Wyborcza wrote. According to a MillwardBrown SMG/KRC poll commissioned by TVN commercial broadcaster 77 percent of Poles negatively assess Kaczynski's discriminating statement. Source: The Warsaw Voice
