U.S. President Barack Obama will make his first trip to Poland May 27-28, where he will attend a meeting of Central and Eastern European leaders. The Polish visit is part of Obama's European tour May 23-28 during which he will also visit Ireland, Britain and France, where he will attend a G8 and G20 summit in Deauville. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and U.S. ambassador to Poland Lee Feinstein both said Obama's visit indicates the importance that the United States attaches to relations with Poland, a close ally. The presidential visit will be an opportunity to strengthen Polish-American cooperation on security issues and to promote democratic values worldwide, Feinstein said. He added that the Polish community in the United States is also pleased with the planned visit. Polish President Bronisław Komorowski officially invited Obama to Poland while in Washington Dec. 8 last year. So far few details are known about Obama's itinerary in Poland-other than that he will meet with Komorowski and Tusk. Who will accompany the president and whether First Lady Michelle Obama will travel with her husband to Poland has not been decided yet. Obama was expected to come to Cracow to attend the funeral of President Lech Kaczyński and First Lady Maria Kaczyńska April 18 last year, but the trip was canceled after a volcanic eruption in Iceland halted air traffic over Europe. Kaczyński was killed in an air crash near Russia's Smolensk airport along with his wife and dozens of other senior Polish officials in April last year. Source: The Warsaw Voice
