July 1, 2011 Poland took over the rotating presidency of the EU for the first time today, with economic growth, security, energy policy and closer cooperation with countries to the east among its priorities during its six months at the helm. Poland is the fourth of the member states that joined the EU in 2004 to hold the rotating presidency of the bloc. The government is hoping to use the occasion to demonstrate that Poland is a mature and responsible partner, bolster the country's position on the international arena and to lure foreign investors by playing up its credentials as a dynamically developing economy. Senior EU officials including President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, will take part in ceremonies in Warsaw. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will officially hand over the EU presidency to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Source: The Warsaw Voice
