This is a famous Mannerist painting by a very
famous Mannerist painter called El Greco.
El Greco is regarded as a Spanish painter
and indeed he's a Spanish painter although
his name means "the Greek", El Greco. And
the reasons why we still regard him as a Spanish
painter, because most of his time and most
of his well-known paintings were actually
produced in Spain. Originally, he is from
Crete. So a Greek island. And he studied in
Venice and Rome, and after studying in Venice
and Rome eventually he ended up in Spain.
What we can see here is one of his best known
paintings. It is "The Agony in the Garden".
And everything one needs to know about Mannerism,
he or she can see this on the painting. You
can see that the composition is not as harmonious
as in a Renaissance painting. This is about
the captivation of Jesus himself. There are
different parts of this painting. We can talk
about this frontal part and background and
even through the way background. We can see
the followers of Jesus, the disciples, sleeping
away at night. Jesus talking to an angel and
we can see Judas with some soldiers who are
already on their way to captivate Jesus himself.
The topic itself evokes tone emotions in religious
people, and this is what El Greco wanted to
achieve.
